Kalaayu is a fusion of two Sanskrit words ‘KALA’+‘AYU’ which means a life dedicated to art and its appreciation. Kala stands for a culmination of skill, art and craft. Our mission is to promote the heritage of India by promoting cultural tourism and traditional handmade practices that are passed down through generations.

Our Story
Smita and Shivani, the sister duo started Kalaayu to channel their passion for traditional crafts, art and cultural tourism. During their travels around India, they willingly or sometimes by chance came across beautiful objects made using art forms that were surprisingly lesser known, unheard of or simply unexplored for their potential.

Thus began Kalaayu's initial journey of documenting, storytelling and conducting heritage walks. Alongside talented artisans from various parts of the country, Smita and Shivani combined their expertise in design, social impact, operations, knowledge sharing and client service to deliver products that strike the perfect balance of craftsmanship, design innovation and quality. They hope to educate the young generations on cultural diversity and sustainable practices that are kept alive through traditional occupations and knowledge systems.
